Leicester England's Diesel Park West has been cranking out stellar, topical rock'n'roll since their debut, Shakespeare Alabama, from 1989. The band's latest effort, Not Quite the American Dream, was made during the lockdown of 2020 and explores more thought provoking avenues all put to sturdy rhythms and hung on superb melodies. "Secondary Modern Man" is the best song Kinks song Ray Davies never wrote and "Best of You" could quite possibly make Paul Weller bristle with jealousy. If you are at all interested in classic British rock'n'roll with a little bit of social commentary thrown in the mix, this is the record for YOU.

about

John Butler: A sister song to "Best Of You" in some ways. It’s my own recollection of the kid years and how they will have inevitably shaped the older me. All those formative deliberate attempts at moulding and shaping for a world that no longer exists other than in memory and mind but the emotional consequences are very much still alive.

lyrics

Young lives, striped ties, break time come get knocked down straight back up
Always something more to learn and see fuelled by intellectual curiosity
Cos I needed to know exactly what was happening
I wanted to know so’s I could make a plan
I needed it bad now I’m a secondary modern man
With just enough to make an impression
Just enough like a line in the sand
Just enough for a secondary modern man

A bird in the hand worth three in the bush
Well one on the floor and two in the shrub
Now I’ve even forgotten what I didn’t know
It's easy come but it's easier to go
And I needed to learn about creatures and kingdoms
I wanted to suss politics and faith
I needed it bad but all they ever really gave was
Just enough lucid conversation just enough clarity
Just enough yeah always just enough for me

I couldn’t think of anything better to do
When my baby said "well why don’t you just rock n roll you?"
Oh just enough

Give us a shot of sincerity cos when you look down your nose we bare our teeth

Just enough dangle of a promise
Just enough charged battery
Just enough temptation and fruit on the tree
Just enough to keep me at the coalface
Just enough to tie me to the lathe
Just enough to keep me fed and afraid oh God help us
Just enough to recognise my background
Not quite the American dream
Just enough was always just enough for me
Yeah just enough to make an impression
Just enough like a line in the sand
Just enough now I’m a secondary modern man
